DHS SERVICE PHILOSOPHY (parental rehabilitation)

In order to evaluate the safety of a parental offender, we have borrowed from a model Dr. Vanderbeck created.  At a minimum, each client should be expected to achieve the following:

  • Take responsibility for any abuse or neglect by admitting to it in detail, and recognizing it as wrong and unhealthy to any child.

  • Demonstrate genuine remorse and guilt as a result of abusive/neglectful behavior.

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the impact one's behavior has had on the child's emotional functioning.

  • Develop a basic understanding of the dynamics, motives, and triggers to the abusive/neglectful behavior(s).

  • Formulate a relapse prevention plan.

This model is an evaluative model that our therapists use as a basis in designing a thorough treatment plan and approach.  Our services are not confined to only these goals.  Upon evaluating where the consumer is on each of the steps, therapeutic goals are established to help the consumer achieve these basic steps and to progress to a greater level of emotional health.

GENERAL THEMES ADDRESSED IN OUTREACH/CLINICAL SERVICES

Additionally, all issues that contribute to the dynamics surrounding the abuse are covered during therapy.  This may include issues such as problematic personality functioning, mental illness, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Core themes have been recognized, during our years of service, as being relevant to the populations referred by DHS staff.  These include:

    • Deficits in social support systems

    • Lacking of basic, essential physical resources (i.e. food, clothing, shelter)

    • Substance abuse and dual diagnosis

    • Attachment Problems in Adults and Children

    • Problems with Identity Formation

    • Poor Physical and Emotional Boundaries

    • Parent's placement of their desires ahead of their children's needs

    • Lack of basic life & social skills

    • Poor hygiene values

    • Unsuitable environment/residence

    • Chronic sense of entitlement

    • Blame shifting

    • Clinging to the role of victim
